Presidential opening:

President Deb Dunkase opened the meeting by thanking Amy Nicholson, greeter, Jean Knepper, clean-up, and Jack Tank, Meals on Wheels.

Announcements:

The theme for October is Community and Economic Development.

There will be an opportunity for cultural sharing on Sunday, Oct. 23^rd from 2:00-5:00 at the University Club.  Tables can be sponsored.  Celebrating the World’s Children is the topic,

And we can support this effort by respecting one another, avoiding generalizations, reaching out and being a friend, teaching children to accept diversity, and most of all,

ALWAYS SMILE.

There will be a board meeting on Oct. 20^th at 6:45 am, Waterfront Hy-Vee Club Room.

CAN DO volunteers Ron, Casey, Karin, and Mike O’Leary should meet at the Eastside Recycle at 9:00 a.m.

The Flea Market is this Saturday from 8-12:00 by Lucky’s.  Bring your items to Peggy Doerge.

Hazel reminded us about the Polio Plus event next Monday at Terry Trueblood Park from 5:30-7:00.

This week and next week are the last weeks for the nut sales to sponsor RYLA students.  Nancy Pacha is collecting the orders.

Program:

Mike Messier introduced Brian Greer, from the Iowa City Fire Department, who gave us many facts and suggestions for fire prevention as well as some slides showing the history of the department.
