Announcements

President Phil Peterson welcomed two new members, Marie Hassel and Geri Schaefer.  Marie is sponsored by Deb Dunkhase and Geri by Amy Nicholson.  Geri is a former AM Rotary member who was active in the early 1990s and then had to leave when her work schedule changed.  She is now working with her husband, Paul, in Eagle Investment Services.  Marie Hassel has been the Executive Director of Childserve for the last several months.  Childserve is a Des Moines nonprofit that started its existence providing services to children with polio.  The historic connection to Rotary is notable.

Phil announced that the incoming RI President, Barry Rassin from the Bahamas, has announced the RI theme for 2018-19 will be "Be the Inspiration."  Rassin's major service areas are polio plus and environmental protection.  He has indicated that with global warming at its current levels his own country will be submerged forever by 2100.

Brian Adamec reminded members to bring in the unused toiletries from their hotel visits to deposit in the basket at the Kirkwood Room for our Soap for Hope project.  These toiletries are given to Shelter House, DVIP and other locations that help homeless individuals.

Deb Ockenfels reminded everyone to sign up for the Toast luncheon on Friday, April 13, 11-2:30 at the Radisson Conference Center in Coralville.  Cost is $49 until April 1.

Condolences go to Gary and Nancy Pacha on the loss of Gary's brother.

Deb Galbraith invited the group to attend a Prairie Lights presentation on Sunday, Feb 4 at 3 pm by one of her long-time friends, Gina Vild, author of "Two Most Important Days: How to find your purpose and live a happier, healthier life." Vild is associate dean and chief communications officer at Harvard Medical School.  Deb will host a reception for the author at her home after.

After a number of happy buck moments Amy Nicholson brought up 4 of our newest members, Mike Lawler, Susie Poulton, Marie Hassel and Geri Schaefer and drilled them on Rotary Jeopardy.  Everyone in the room learned a thing or two about RI, the history of IC AM Rotary, and District 6000.
